Honor's Night at the Space Center. Space and Science News. The Imaginarium.

Honors Night at the Space Center

The Christa McAuliffe Space Education Center wrapped up the 2015 summer space camp season with an Honor's Night celebration last Tuesday evening.

There is a lot of news in this post; news that must be told in greater depth and detail. For news sake, I'll post the pictures and brief descriptions today and post addition pictures with more detail soon in future posts.

Mr. W.

There was enough pizza to feed an army, which is just what the doctor ordered.

Scott was named "Lord of the Votes" for the whole summer!  Scott was allowed to hold the sacred Lord of the Votes trophy - a long time Space Center relic - then was obliged to return it safely into the hands of Mr. Porter.

Marissa was awarded "Lord of the Votes" runner up for taking the most third place votes all summer long.  Congratulations!

The staff and volunteers each had Dave Dollars to spend on an auction or donate to the simulator of their choice.  Mr. Porter gave a certain amount of Dave Dollars (named after Dave Daymont, a former Space Center flight director and long time friend of the Phoenix) for the number of hours volunteered at the Center during the summer.

It was a good turnout of staff and volunteers.  The stars of the evening are centered in the photo.

Christine and James are engaged to be married!  It is a Space Center wedding!

Scott outbid anyone who dared oppose him to take this Star Trek Enterprise cut out.

Harrison got his Galileo Pin.

Isaac and Lissa both received their Magellan pins from Jon.

Jon was well pleased.

More good news.  Lissa and Isaac are on the Space Center's payroll.  Congratulations!

Lindsey received her Phoenix pin from Miranda.

Jordan has volunteered at the Space Center for five years!

Nathan also received his five year pin!

Lindsey, Lissa, and Isaac announced the formation of a new Actor's Guild.

Nathan got his pillow case.

Christine was named FLIGHT DIRECTOR OF THE SUMMER for the Odyssey.

Phoenix Set Director Miranda is leaving the Space Center. She passed the Phoenix mic and the simulator's directorship to Jordan.  Jordan is the new Phoenix Set Director.

Nathan is leaving for an LDS mission to Panama.  He passed the Galileo mic and directorship to Erin.

The Galileo took the BEST SIMULATOR OF THE SUMMER award.

Erin proudly removed the Magellan plate from the Outstanding Simulator plaque and replaced it with the Galileo.

And here are the numbers.

HTV-5 Arrives at ISS

Cargo ship in orbit just below the ISS.

Monday morning at about 6:58 am EDT, the Japanese robotic cargo spaceship HTV-5 arrived at the International Space Station and was grappled by the robotic arm. The craft had blasted off from the Tanegashima launch center in Japan last week on Wednesday.

Grapple complete. Astronauts will use the robotic arm to safely move the craft to its docking port, in order to avoid thruster gases from contaminating the surfaces of station modules and experiments.

HTV-5 (H-II Transfer Vehicle 5) carries 4.5 tons of supplies for the station. These items are critical for the station's operations, as the last year has seen the loss of three important resupply missions to ISS. In October 2014 the Cygnus vessel exploded on the pad, and this year saw the loss of a Russian Progress cargo ship and the destruction of a SpaceX Dragon cargo ship.

Japanese Mission Control.

The HTV-5 is docked at the Node 2 docking port, where the SpaceX Dragon is normally berthed.
