David Kyle Herring Running for Delegate at Large

Dear Space Center Friends,

It has been 25 years since I first walked in the doors of the Space Center in Pleasant Grove.  It was because of my experiences at the Space Center, combined with being raised in a very patriotic household, that gave me a lifelong interest in politics .

In 2009, I decided to get involved in our political system, but I did not know where to begin. Unfortunately, civics is not taught in our educational system.  I got lucky and received a Facebook friend request from a candidate running for US Senate.  I expressed my desire to help the campaign. Within weeks, I was attending campaign meetings, organizing, helping to build a website for the campaign, and traveling the state for my candidate.  After a few months, and with a lot of training from outside consultants, I was hired and promoted to campaign manager.

Because of the professional volunteer organization we built, and a new network of people I met in Utah and Washington DC, I was offered positions on other campaigns, including with a highly respected National Political Action Committee.

One year later I married my beautiful wife, quit my political jobs, and went back into the private sector.

I credit my success in politics to my time at the Space Center. While at the Space Center, I learned the art of debate, the skills to organize large groups of volunteers, the ability to motivate volunteers to do hard things, give presentations, solve difficult logistical problems, and learn the art of mediation and conflict resolution. The Space Center environment is truly a great place to prepare yourself for politics.

Fast forward to March of 2015. Ted Cruz became the first candidate to enter the race for President. I made a principled decision to donate to his campaign and join his Utah Campaign Team. “Experts” gave Senator Ted Cruz less than a 1% chance of making it past the first four state primaries and caucus’.  No one thought his presidential race would be decided at convention. This is history in the making!

About a month ago, I registered to run for Utah Republican Party National Alternate Delegate At-Large. If I'm elected by the state delegates this Saturday at the State Republican Party Convention, I will have the opportunity to go to Cleveland, Ohio for the Republican National Convention and support the nomination of Senator Ted Cruz as the next President of the United States.

If I am elected to represent Utah at this historic convention, I plan on making daily reports with pictures and video to Mr. Williamson for posting on the Troubadour.

I hope more of my Space Center friends will get involved and learn about the political process. I would be happy to help anyone get involved regardless of your party affiliation.
Thank you, and I hope to see everyone next month at the launch of the new Voyager Simulator at Renaissance.
