The Sandwich Club Starts a New Season

With the start of a new school year, the exclusive and extremely selective Sandwich Club reopened last Friday evening and welcomed its members back after a long summer hiatus. 

The Club met in my classroom at Renaissance Academy in Lehi, home of the new USS Voyager. The Voyager is the Grand Lady of simulators, the Taj Mahal of starships, the Queen of the Cosmos.  

The members enjoyed a delicious WalMart subway sandwich with chips and the good pickles (not the cheap store brand muck) on the side. Bottled water was the only beverage on tap.  There were plenty of good conversations, stories, jokes, and remberences of time spent long ago on the field of battle.  I lost count of the number of times I heard "Do you remember the time.......".  

  

Devon, Ben, and Matt were welcomed back from their LDS missions.  They shared a tale or two of their religious adventures - all of which made me very happy to live in the good old United States of America.  Lorraine Houston introduced the Club to her first grandbaby.  It was a good time had by all.

Touring the USS Voyager was only agenda item that night.  Alex Anderson conducted the nickel tours while I entertained the VIP's upstairs in the classroom.  

The evening was a success. I can say that because several of those present committed to volunteering in the new Voyager. Bringing the Voyager back has been an act of love on many people's part.  Having these veterans of the simulator arts on board guarantees success.  What a blessing it will be to see a new Voyager fly again.

Recent Adventures at Dream Flight Adventures

With the school year ramping up around the globe we wanted to take a brief moment to give a shout out to all the great Dream Flight Adventures simulators that are busily opening the minds and expanding the horizons of our students.  Here are two examples from this week:

Here we see Brian Colgan—also known as Admiral Octavius—at STEAM Showcase in the Pittsburgh region demonstrating how the IKS Buccaneer is enhancing education at Stewart Elementary.  He has the simulator controls running on his projector, laptop, and iPads to give educators a first-hand look at how the magic comes together.

Further south—in Venezuela—Todd Lichtenwalter is having some projector fun of this own.  Even though the IKS Artemis Charger isn’t even fully constructed, he’s already bringing educational adventures to the big screen.

ISS Starts Expedition 45

On Saturday, September 5, The astronauts and cosmonauts on the International Space Station held a ceremony marking the change of command from the Expedition 44 commander, cosmonaut Gennady Padalka, to astronaut Scott Kelly. Officially, the new expedition began on Sep. 11 when Padalka and flight engineers Andreas Mogensen (ESA) and Aidyn Ambetov (Kazakh Space Agency) undocked in the Soyuz TMA-16M spacecraft.

The landing complete's Padalka's fifth space mission. He now holds a record of 879 total days spent in space. The other two returning voyagers were visitors to the ISS and not part of an ISS expedition. Mogensen is from the European Space Agency, while Ambetov is the third cosmonaut to fly from Kazakhstan.  New Expedition 45 commander Scott Kelly, along with cosmonaut Mikhail Kornienko, is staying aboard the ISS for an entire year. Monday September 14 will mark the halfway-point for the long-duration mission.
