The Space Academy welcomed the first Young Astronaut cadet squadron from American Heritage School last Tuesday. The Gamma Squadron met from 3:30 to 6:00 P.M. The meeting started in my classroom. The cadets were introduced to the club, learned the club rules, and received their new ranks as cadets 3rd class with the privilege of wearing the red lanyards. They discussed who would be best for the bridge jobs and made their selections. The next stop, the Voyager's Briefing Room and the Bridge itself.
Mr. Bracken Funk did the house keeping checklist with them.
1. How to tell when a member of staff / volunteer is acting in an official capacity or as an actor.
2. How to "die" safely without causing an injury to oneself or an actor.
3. How to discover hidden contraband an actor may have upon himself.
4. How to move an actor from the prone stunned position to the brig or sickbay safely.
5. Bridge vocabulary and its meaning; like "You're Down".
The Gammas met Alex Debirk, their American Heritage Chapter Leader. This was their first
meeting and for many, the first time they were introduced to Alex. They were excited to learn their school was getting a Space EdVenture Center of its own.
Boarding using the Transition Pod is always entertaining. Mr. Funk and the volunteers have made it a ride unto itself.
Training went smoothly. They picked up their jobs without too much of a problem. Just a great group of 5th graders all around. Many were familiar with some of the jobs having recently been on a field trip to the Christa McAuliffe Space Center.
American Heritage is fielding three cadet squadrons this year. One 5th Grade and two 6-8th Grade bringing the total number of Space Academy squadrons to 17.
