A Space Elevator? Water Seen Flowing on Mars. An Awesome Map of the Galaxy - See Where You Are. The Imaginarium.

I'm getting ready to settle in and enjoy a night of Olympic coverage.  But before I do, I thought I'd better update you on a few bits of interesting news and then send you to bed with another installment of The Imaginarium.

A Space Elevator?
In order to get into space, we have very few options. Actually, we currently only have one. We put people in a sophisticated vehicle, strap them on top of a horrific amount of fuel, and light a fuse, igniting a drawn-out explosion. So far this has been largely effective, but the associated risks and costs are a bit of a drawback.
Naturally, we must ask ourselves, “Are there any alternatives?” There are currently a few ideas being entertained, each with varying degrees of plausibility. The most endearing of these is probably the space elevator, a concept that envisions a tether extending from the Earth’s surface to the halfway point between Earth and the Moon.  Read More at Quarks to Quasars

Water Flowing on Mars Right Now?  New Pictures Say Yes.
Scientists at JPL say that new analysis of pictures taken on Mars contains the "strongest indication" that there is water flowing on the red planet, right now.  Read more and see the water flows.
